  • I’m an ethical Service Provider – what does that mean?

I’ve labelled myself as an ethical service provider for some time now but have not fully explained this unless the need has arisen, and to individuals. I’d like to clear up what I mean by this and how this might affect my dealings with companies and individuals.

It’s been something I have always been concerned about but not always known how to approach, how to provide services which benefit and do not harm. To me business is not merely about putting cash in my pocket. I believe that the way we earn our living should be something we give careful consideration. Does it really make sense to be feeding oneself at to the destruction of someone else.

Dr. Ngalande’s Sugar and Yeast Power Generator

Just off chatting with White Africa, A.K.A. Hash, blog master of AfriGadget.com who lives in the US. I thought I’d take another look at AfriGadget and see if I can find anything which sparks my interest.

Step onto the scene a Sugar & Yeast Powered Generator

cedricks_generator This invention(by Dr. Cedrick Ngalande’s) has massive implications for South Africa, not only directly related to the problem of charging of mobile phones in rural settings but in general, for the energy crisis we are experiencing locally.

This shows that Africans are very much innovating and working towards solutions to some of the most crucial problems mankind will be facing in the very near future.

“The rotor moves slowly most of the times but does pick up at certain intervals. This process continues for many hours. Since the rotor is quite heavy (and hence more inertia) a small geared DC motor can be connected to the rotor to generate power for cell phones, $100 laptops, and other things in Africa. People can leave this thing to charge their phones/$100 laptops overnight.”

The blog post where I found this little invention has a hot commenting debate about the actual viability of the invention, but like “Hash” the blog author responded, we need to be talking about what people are doing and maybe by spreading the word others can contribute and help build on these ideas.

Anyone out there know of any other cool low tech energy solutions? All I can say is Go Africa, Go!!

  • Tapping into the power of strategy

The importance of having a strategic approach to business cannot be understated. While many business people are content to keep going at it in the same way they always have, taking a step back and assessing what lies ahead, the challenges, the goals, the failures and successes is not always part of the process.

Dr Jonathan Foster Pedley of the GSB posted with You Tube video his students developed to explain “What Strategy Is …”. Inspiring & Insightful.

I also “stumble” across this article(Tapping into the power of strategy) written by Antoinette Tyrrell, strategy director at the Switch Group in which she says:

Strategy means planning, doing, checking and replanning – while keeping your staff engaged in this process. To ensure it’s the most successful it can be it needs to cross disciplines; linking the silos in your organisation. This will ensure that each and every person in your organisation, no matter their department, is working towards a common goal.

A business plan should be one of the key tools driving your strategy. I’m not talking about those dead never to be opened business plans developed merely to apply for funding, I’m talking about something which is dynamic and changes with the needs and growth of your company.

The business plan covers the bigger picture and many times this is something we neglect to take a look at in the daily running of our businesses, what is the overall mission we are trying to achieve, and do our daily activities contribute towards that.

Sometimes it’s good to get the help of an outside party who is detached from emotional involvement and can give you an outsider’s perspective.

    Antionette goes on to say:

a strategy expert doesn’t have to come with an intimidating price tag. Look for a company that offers you someone who will immerse themselves in your business; someone who will go down the mineshaft, wear a hard hat, and get into the thick of things to find the answers you need. Great strategies are not developed behind closed doors or in ivory towers.

Taking the concept of immersion deeper, it takes conscious immersion to pin point areas of focus. Many times immersion of the wrong kind, like that of the micro-manager hovering over everyone’s shoulders produces negative results. the type of immersion needed should allow for weaknesses to be uncovered. inviting a strategist on board and then trying to plug the gaps before he/she arrives might save some perceived embarrassment but won’t produce the results you are in need of.

If you’re not willing to take advice from an outsider on your weaknesses, then you’re probably more likely to get stuck into certain static patterns which eventually reach deadlocks and don’t produce results.

The term strategy has it’s roots in war, and was used to define the plan needed to win the battle. It’s a war zone out there when you think about how tight competition is and having an edge over your competitors means having a differential strategy.

Strategy is also not about plans being passed down from the top through the hierarchical chain. It’s more about conversation and insight into what goes on on the ground. It goes without saying that all parties must be willing to talk and listen and to be transparent in their conversation.

It’s the leader who is willing to employ someone more knowledgeable than himself that understands this.

  • My ethically focused agency idea gathers momentum

    rubbish_bin

    found on http://www.theethicalagency.co.uk

No this is not my business, of course not, not yet that is. I’ve come across quite a few UK based agencies of this nature in the last few years and it’s been my mission for a while to start one here in South Africa.

TEA – The Ethical Agency, is a UK based ethically motivated advertising company which promotes ethical business and lifestyles and does so in a really thought provoking manner.

Visiting their site has pricked my imagination somewhat and helped further crystallise the idea which has been brewing in my head for way too long.

So who out there has any ideas regarding ethical business?

Does this interest you, do you see a need for it?

Anyone passionate enough to take it a step further and do something?

We are all agents of change in our own right and have the responsibility to create a better space for all of us to live in.

I found these inspiring quotes on TEA’s website:

Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, for as long as you can. -John Wesley

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. -Greek proverb

  • Yesterday was one Great day to remember- Open Coffee and all

Whfew! What a day, been getting birthday wishes(I’ve just turned 30) from all sides, messages of congratulations related to so many great things that have been happening lately and business looks set to boom in the coming months.

I have to say thanks to all of you out there who have been keeping in touch and being great support. This buzzy period comes after month of struggle and difficulty and I’ve seen times of major doubt and disillusionment. My sites traffic has seen a huge spike, some nominations for a few awards and some prizes coming my way from others.

It makes me think of a verse from the Quran which goes something like: “Truely, After Difficulty comes ease, After difficulty comes ease.”

The thing is, this is only just the beginning for me. I look forward to building a great network, upping my game in the blogosphere, building a great business and solving some key problems for business and society along the way.

Open Coffee was a huge success today with a great turnout. As usual Henk Kleynhans of Skyrove was there topping us up with free skyrove credits which we are all grateful for. Thanks a ton Henk! I finally chatted with Eric Edelstein briefly. Eric is the original organiser of the Open Coffee Cape Town Meet up.

I also met up with the guys(Kilian & Nico) from Red Button and chatted briefly about their businesses development, cool things coming from their side regarding wireless hotspots. You can become a Red Button affiliate and earn some cash by recommending a venue which needs a hotspot. I think Red button could learn a thing or 2 from Skyrove’s event sponsorship approach.
Callum Macdonald was around doing his regular Scottishly nomadic thing and promoting the wordpress meetup which has shifted to Wednesday 26 March due to the easter weekend.

I had a very interesting Interaction with Frans Kuipers who I met at the first Open Coffee I attended last month. Frans is an open source enthusiast and a Drupal developer. We spoke about the problem Open Source seems to have with getting rapid uptake of it’s programmes and platforms in the general public. From my perspective it has to do with 1. Usability and 2. Communication and Marketing. Some areas programmers & developers don’t always have a tight handle on

I also met Andre from Biz-community and a guy from Joyent who’s name I forget because his business card was a Joyent Logo on a sticker. A few others who I chatted with briefly were Scott Hayes(Encyclomedia), Michelle Matthews(Writer & Publishing Consultant) and Will Gubb(Wired Communications).

Myself & Callum spent a bit of time trying to convince one of the above that wordpress is better for blogging than Joomla, I won’t mention who.

I had to rush off after receiving a call for an urgent proposal, hold thumbs for me, it’s a nice big one. I spent the following few hours in Kauai recovering from the coffee scrabbling down a proposal just before the sun went down.

All in all, another productive day of networking, doing business and sharing of ideas.
